What do we do with all the brash? How can we increase the fertility of our soil? Biochar is the answer to both. It is a fine charcoal, whose microporous structure helps to hold nutrients in the soil and provide habitat for beneficial soil microbes.
We will be making biochar from brash left over from our hedgelaying course. You will learn how to make biochar using our Oregon Kiln and how this method can be simplified and scaled up or down to suit your personal needs. You will be able to take some home for your garden at the end of the day. We will discuss a brief history of biochar, how it can be activated, and how it can be used in the garden and on the farm.
All tools are supplied for this course but you will need to wear non-flammable clothing. Wool and cotton are best.
In order to ensure a quality experience for all, we only take six people on this course.
