Proper Edges is dedicated to the boundaries that shape and define the countryside, and the traditional tools that make their care possible. From the cutting edges of billhooks, axes and scythes to the living boundaries of hedges, banks, dry stone walls and cleft chestnut gates, we combine time-honoured craftsmanship with contemporary thinking to understand, restore and care for the landscape.
Based near Buckfastleigh in South Devon, Proper Edges is run by Jeremy Weiss and a small team of skilled helpers.
Jeremy has spent many years restoring and maintaining Devon’s hedges, managing meadows with a scythe, and making traditional sweet chestnut gates. He is an experienced teacher with a deep appreciation for Devon’s unique countryside and its rich heritage. Jeremy holds a First Class Honours degree in Environmental Science from the University of Plymouth.
Through practical conservation work, tuition, guided walks, talks and consultancy, Jeremy is committed to sharing his knowledge of the boundaries that make the countryside so distinctive. By helping others understand the skills, traditions and tools needed to care for them, Proper Edges aims to ensure these remarkable landscapes continue to thrive for generations to come.
