Start Location: Dartmeet.
Cost: £15
Time: 3 hours approx. (10:00-13:00)
Join us for a relaxed walk exploring the rich history, ecology, and cultural landscape of Dartmoor.
Beginning at Dartmeet, where the East and West Dart rivers converge, we’ll follow ancient tracks and winding paths across one of the most beautiful parts of the moor. Along the way, we’ll make regular short stops to discuss Dartmoor’s remarkable hedges and stone walls, learning how generations of farmers and commoners have shaped this landscape over thousands of years.
From Dartmeet, we’ll climb steadily towards Combestone Tor, with sweeping views across open moorland and the surrounding patchwork of Bronze Age field systems. From Combestone Tor, we’ll descend towards Hexworthy and Huccaby, passing old boundary banks, flower-rich pastures, and fragments of medieval farming systems.
We’ll discuss the importance of these traditional field boundaries for wildlife, and consider how they continue to connect habitats across the moor today. We’ll examine how they can be conserved and properly managed.
There will be opportunities to pause by the river and take in the stunning scenery, before heading back to Dartmeet for a picnic (bring your own) and dip in the Dart.
As well as gaining insight into the origins and history of Dartmoor’s field boundaries, you’ll come away with a deeper understanding of the relationship between farming, wildlife, and landscape on the moor, why these ancient features remain so important today, and what we can do to preserve this incredible heritage.
The walk is approximately 3 miles (5 km) with uneven terrain and some significant climbs. Sturdy footwear and suitable outdoor clothing are recommended. The walk will take around 3 hours. If this sounds like too much for you, try our 2-hour tour in November. If you prefer running, try our 13 mile run on the 30th of August.
The car park is £5.60 for the day but please note that the meter does not accept cash: card or Ringo payments only. Please share lifts if possible. Please contact us for a lift from Buckfastleigh or Ashburton.
