Come and spend the day on our off-grid smallholding in South Devon for an introduction into what food, fibre and fuel can be foraged from hedges. The course includes:
- Introduction to the history, ecology and management of Devon’s hedges
- Exploring the local hedges for food and fibre.
- How to cut, split, stack and dry wood from hedges.
- Sourcing and using natural tinders to light a fire from scratch
- Different methods of using wood to heat water and cook food
- Learning how to identify and process fibres from hedges.
All food and refreshments are included and are gluten-free. We will make our own gluten-free pizza in a cob bread oven on Saturday evening. Vegetarian options are available. You are welcome to camp over on the Saturday evening free of charge. We have basic compost toilet and hand washing facilities but no showers. Please let us know if you intend to stay over and whether you have any other dietary requests.
Jeremy Weiss runs Proper Edges and has been working with hedges for over 25 years. He teaches rural skills and loves to share his skills and knowledge. Jolyon Lynam was home-schooled and spent much of his childhood outside. He has a lot of experience teaching bushcraft skills and works for Wildwise as well as Proper Edges.
