Foraging for Fuel in Hedges

Times: 09:00 – 16:00 each day

Come and spend the weekend at our beautiful smallholding in South Devon learning all about fuel from hedges. The course includes:

  • Introduction to the history, ecology and management of Devon’s hedges
  • Charcoal making in a simple cob kiln
  • Cutting, splitting, stacking and drying wood from the hedge
  • Making bundles of brush wood called faggots
  • Sourcing and using natural tinders to light a fire from scratch
  • Using storm kettles and rocket stoves to heat water and cook food

You will need a packed lunch for the first day but all other food and refreshments are included and are gluten free. We will make our own pizza in a cob bread oven on Saturday evening and Sunday lunch will be a barbecue using the charcoal we made on Saturday.
