Time: 7 hours
This day course is for hedge layers of all standards. Whether you have never picked up a billhook before, are a professional hedgelayer, or somewhere in between, there is always something to learn.
Devon Style involves laying the hedge horizontally along the top of a bank and the hedge is held down using crooks. This style is also used in Cornwall and in some parts of Somerset.
The course will include safety considerations, cutting and laying the hedge, and securing the hedge using natural crooks.
There will also be time to answer your questions on topics such as alternatives to hedge laying, restoring badly neglected hedges, the cultural, historical and environmental important of hedges, the hedge as a resource and the use of brash to make biochar.
You are welcome to bring your own tools if you have them already, or we can lend you some for the day.
