Hedgerow Management, Origins and Ecology

Instructors: Jeremy Weiss and John Day

Location: South Devon Steiner School, near Dartington

Cost: £40

Time: 6 hours

Join ecologist John Day and hedgelayer Jeremy Weiss for a tour of Hood Manor’s many and varied hedges, some of which are hundreds of years old. Learn all about the history and ecology of Devon’s hedges, how they serve both humans and wildlife, and how we can maintain them and keep them in good health.

Jeremy will describe hedge laying and its associated skills such as stone facing, casting up and turf hedging and there will be a practical hedgelaying demonstration. You will be able to see hedges at all different stages of their growth cycle.

John will explain in detail the fascinating history of hedgerows and how they can be aged and he’ll explain how valuable they are for a wide diversity of wildlife.

There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion throughout the day.
