A guided tour of Hood Manor’s many and varied hedges.
Learn about the ancient origins and diverse ecology of Devon’s hedges, how they serve both humans and wildlife, and how we can maintain them and keep them in good health.
You will see recent examples of hedge laying and its associated skills such as stone facing, casting up and turf hedging. We will discuss planting, trimming, coppicing and other management techniques. You will be able to see hedges at all different stages of their growth cycle.
You will hear about how and why hedges are so valuable for such a wide diversity of wildlife and how they can be aged using different methods.
The tour is followed by refreshments including homemade gluten-free mince pies and mulled juice.
