Stone facing, or stone hedging, is the technique of creating a stone face against an earth bank without the use of mortar. It can be used to repair old stone-faced hedges, or create small retaining walls in gardens, etc. Many of Devon’s hedges are faced with stone which can be laid horizontally or vertically and they vary hugely from place to place due to Devon’s incredibly diverse geology. Soil is packed tightly in behind the stonework to hold it in place, creating a durable and beautiful finish.
